COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Former Dothan mayor Mike Schmitz donated $25,000 to restore the historic Dupree School Community Center. The funds will support modern upgrades and space for art programs, concerts, 4-H and FFA events (aiming to preserve the building and extend educational opportunities) with work set to complete by next fall.  WTVY
  • Robert Middlebrooks, Wade Ellenburg and Ralph Ellenburg grow fresh produce for local grocery stores; vegetable distribution begins tomorrow, Feb. 18.  WTVY
  • After Mardi Gras festivities ended, local parade organizers — part of the Krewe — asked residents to donate extra beads, cups, plush toys or other throws for use in next year’s celebration. Donations may be dropped off during regular business hours at The Velvet Art Gallery at 102 S. Cherokee Ave and Sweet and Sassy Bakery at 143 Westgate Parkway.  Wiregrass Daily News

  • The Dothan Songwriters Festival—highlighting local talent—is set for March 28 in downtown Dothan. The event will offer live music and a day of cultural celebration for the community.  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Houston County Schools was named the best academic system in Alabama, and Assistant Superintendent Judy Thomas said the district plans to build on its success to support students and teachers.  WTVY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Area high school basketball teams are starting their AHSAA playoff run today at Garrett Coliseum and the Acadome after winning area championships and earning Sweet 16 spots. Games are scheduled through Feb. 20 with the top teams heading to Birmingham for the Final Four in early March.  WTVY
