COMMUNITY NEWS

  • House of Ruth received a $95,000 grant from the Southeast Alabama Coalition for the Homeless—this funding comes at a time of urgent need for the organization.  WTVY
  • The Dothan Houston County Library System is hosting its Big Book Sale at Westgate Recreation Center Gym starting today until April 13 — this event features books as low as 50¢ and paper sacks with books, DVDs and games for only $20. Library members may shop early on April 3 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with memberships available at the door for $5 and all proceeds supporting the library.  Wiregrass Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Delta Airlines flight struck a bird after leaving Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday—landing at Dothan Regional Airport at 3:30 p.m. where airport officials inspected the plane for four hours before it departed at 8:00 p.m. for Atlanta.  WDHN

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge postponed Dwight Mills’ cold case murder trial—he is accused of killing his wife decades ago—and prosecutors said the trial will resume soon while his defense attorney still reviews evidence from other cases.  WTVY
  • Dothan resident Brent Guilford killed fellow inmate Lashawn Poke in a love triangle and was sentenced to life without parole on Wednesday — jurors found him guilty last month.  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty and staff at Dothan Preparatory Academy returned backpacks and cell phones left behind after a suspected tornado, and 7th graders and their families picked them up yesterday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the auditorium entrance—no one was allowed inside.  WDHN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cottonwood’s police now has only Chief Tony Money—who works 40 hours a week because of health issues—and the town gets police coverage for only about 25 percent of the time after another officer resigned. Mayor Calvin Van Granger said county deputies will help keep the town safe while a dispute over hiring extra officers arose, and council member Angie Hackney denied any claims of opposition.  WTVY

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 44th Annual Dothan/Houston County Special Olympics will be held on April 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Dothan High School Track, where a parade of participants will begin the day with an Olympic torch run led by local law enforcement before athletes compete in track and field events. The public is invited to attend+cheer the competitors.  Wiregrass Daily News
