COMMUNITY NEWS

  • O'Cool Bike Foundation, a non-profit that provides bikes and helmets to Head Start programs, is hosting a benefit ride and walk to raise funds for its work supporting local children.  WTVY
  • The House of Ruth, a local nonprofit, will host an event called As We Boot Out Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 230 E. Powell Street—community members will join in line dancing and music to help raise donations for victims of abuse.  Wiregrass Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Dothan Fire responded at 2:13 p.m. to a two-vehicle wreck in front of Ace Hardware on the 2500 block of Ross Clark Circle; Dothan Police confirmed a Kia Soul and a Nissan Altima were involved (with one vehicle heavily damaged and a passenger reporting chest pain from the airbag deployment).  Rickey Stokes News

  • Fisher-Price has recalled two baby toys because small parts can break off and become choking hazards — parents should stop using the SnugaPuppy tissue box toy and the Brunch & Go Stroller toy and follow the company instructions to mark, photograph, and replace them. Customers are urged to check their products and contact Fisher-Price through its website or customer service for help with the free replacement process.  Wiregrass Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 9, the Alabama Senate approved Senate Bill 92 to ban student cell phone use during school hours unless they are used for educational purposes or emergencies—each public school will set a wireless policy and add an Internet safety course before eighth grade. The bill now moves to the House for consideration and will take effect in the 2025-2026 school year if passed.  Wiregrass Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • April 10 was Gopher Tortoise Day—a day to honor these keystone species in Alabama’s longleaf pine forests that shelter over 360 animal species including the federally threatened Eastern indigo snake. Conservation groups and state agencies are planting longleaf pine on safe sites as the tortoises continue to face threats from habitat loss and human interference.  Wiregrass Daily News
