COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kevin Dixon has worked at the Cottonwood Fire Department for three years and is a 2021 graduate who also serves as assistant fire chief for Lovetown FD, chaplain for the Houston County Fire Association, and youth pastor at Union Hill Baptist Church in Cottonwood.  Rickey Stokes News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Since last month DISH Network has kept WTVY and WRGX off its service due to a dispute with Gray Media, and customers are encouraged to push DISH to bring the channels back. Gray Media said DISH first extended service during major events but then changed its terms.  WTVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Donnia Rambin and Gil Anthony said the Wiregrass Blues Society will hold its quarterly meeting on April 21 at the Blue Moon Cafe courtyard in Dothan to share plans for upcoming events (details provided by organizers).  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wallace College on Wheels stopped at CHS in Cottonwood on Apr. 14 to help seniors register for classes, apply, and discuss financial aid & student support services as they prepared for the next step in their studies.  Rickey Stokes News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Dale County Sheriff’s Office will launch its Senior Outreach and Support Program in May to check on isolated seniors (ensuring they receive community resources) and support local elderly residents.  WTVY
  • The Alabama Legislature approved a bill to set standard ambulance reimbursement rates for EMS services (including Perry County) to ease costs and support 24/7 operations, and the measure awaits the Governor's signature before taking effect Oct. 1.  Rickey Stokes News

HEALTH NEWS

  • State health officials say the HPV vaccine is very effective at preventing cervical and throat cancers as part of Operation Wipe Out, a plan launched in 2023 to end cervical cancer deaths by 2033. Residents ages 9 to 46 are encouraged to talk with their doctor (information available at local clinics).  WTVY

  • Eight local sports figures were inducted into the Henry County Sports Hall of Fame for their big impact on athletic programs and community life—honoring a lasting legacy that guides future athletes.  WTVY
