EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ After a tornado hit Dothan Preparatory Academy, leaders from Dothan City Schools and city officials met to plan future crisis responses—detailing steps to improve safety and emergency protocols. Dothan Eagle
- ➤ The Dothan City Board of Education voted 4-2 Tuesday evening to partner with the Alabama Association of School Boards—using its Superintendent Finder service—to search for a new superintendent after Dr. Dennis Coe announced his retirement at the end of his contract in late June. The group will survey staff and community members, advertise the position, and review applications for a search that costs $7,499. Wiregrass Daily News
- ➤ Dothan High School student Haley Luhn earned 2nd place in the Sculpture category at the 2025 Visual Arts Achievement Program with her piece "Knowledge Within"—the first state-level art honor in school history. - ➤ On Tuesday, the Alabama Education Association sent a letter accusing board chairman Scott Childers (and other board members) of overstepping their authority by asking Dothan school employees to perform tasks that go against policy and by leaking inside information that harmed staff. The letter said their actions stopped a fair choice for a new superintendent and deepened the divide among school workers. WTVY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local officials said they secured federal support for the East Side Community Center—this will boost student financial literacy efforts in Dothan. The funds will help expand programs that teach money skills to local students. Dothan Eagle
- ➤ The sanitary sewer contractor will begin work in Dothan on the 1000 block of West Main Street between Virginia Drive and S. Edgewood Drive at 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 21st and continue until 6:00 a.m. Friday, April 25th. Drivers should expect lane closures and digital arrow signs—use caution when driving in the area. WTVY
