COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Gordon and its schoolhouse received a historic marker on Good Friday as local officials (Chairman Brandy White and Commissioner Tracy Adams) and longtime church members celebrated the designation. The church, which now runs a food program (helping feed the needy), will work to preserve its past and honor its legacy.  Rickey Stokes News
  • The Ozark Dale County Library will host an Ice Cream Social next Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in its outdoor green space to honor volunteer support and offer free ice cream sundaes—an event open to all volunteers and their families.  Wiregrass Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 19th at approximately 12:32 p.m., Geneva County 911 dispatched fire crews to 1543 South County Road 49 in Malvern where a tractor caught fire and a vehicle overturned — firefighters quickly controlled the blaze with no injuries while officials urged drivers to slow down and move over near accidents.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Today at 4:03 p.m., Dothan 911 dispatched units to Fairfield Inn at 3038 Ross Clark Circle after a second-floor pull station activated an alarm and a volunteer reported a fire—firefighters from several engines and trucks, led by Battalion Chief Jack Wood and Fire Chief Larry Williams, entered the building, checked each room, and secured all guests while containing the incident.  Rickey Stokes News

  • The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce will host the Women’s Night Out: Bingo, Bubbles & Relaxation on May 8 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. for a $35 event that offers bingo with prizes, hors d'oeuvres, wine, and relaxation stations with options like massages or hand waxing, and early registration is encouraged due to limited space.  Wiregrass Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Dothan held its 4th Annual Loop Music & Art Festival last weekend with over 4,000 people coming—nearly three times the 2022 crowd. Visitors enjoyed live music, local food, art displays and vendors, and organizers gave out $2,100 in awards as they plan a larger event next year.  Wiregrass Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • 2025 got off to an active start for tornadoes with 528 confirmed so far and an EF2 tornado that hit Pike County between Troy and Banks on March 15—this local event reflects the early flare-up in severe weather while past trends show that an early burst does not guarantee a busy season ahead.  WTVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An Alabama VA spokesperson said he would not comment on reports that a work crew ignited a fire at the CSM Bennie G. Adkins State Veterans Home—90 veterans were displaced, most were moved to Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation, and an investigation will follow as firefighters removed shingles to access the smoldering flames.  WTVY
  • Representative Rick Rehm led the House vote on a bill to make Juneteenth a state holiday, and the bill now moves to the Senate—where it must receive enough votes before going to Governor Kay Ivey for a signature.  WTVY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Geneva native Makaley Boswell led Troy to a 3-2 series-clinching win over Texas State on Saturday with three hits and two RBIs—her 14th multi-hit game this season. This victory marked Troy's first road win against Texas State and they will begin their next series against Georgia State on April 25.  WDHN
