  • Dothan Housing will host its first Mother’s Day Women Empowerment Event on May 3 to support low-income single mothers by providing inspirational speakers, wellness booths, self-care packages, refreshments and special gifts. Local businesses are invited to donate by April 28—helping ensure the event offers practical and emotional support.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • The American Legion Chester R. Vickery Post 12 Auxiliary is helping 91 displaced veterans by delivering gifts — a gesture meant to support local veterans in need.  Dothan Eagle
  • Wiregrass Daily News has unveiled a free online platform that lets residents list and find yard and estate sales with key details like dates and locations. The service supports local commerce + helps neighbors connect and plan their treasure hunts.  Wiregrass Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Dothan Fire responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into a building at 1108 Reeves Street; one person was taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries—Reeves Street has reopened to traffic.  Rickey Stokes News
  • A two-vehicle crash near US Highway 84 and County Road 514 sent one person to the hospital in critical condition early Friday morning—rescue teams quickly extricated the victim and airlifted them from New Brockton to Southeast Health Medical Center in Dothan as investigators check the cause.  Wiregrass Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Dothan Opera House reopens after renovations with a full summer lineup of weekend performances including concerts and comedy shows, and its first performance is sold out. A singer-songwriter competition is set for July 19 and a Park Series (beginning June 19 at Solomon Park) will offer live art in community areas.  Wiregrass Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dothan High School senior Paden Wood — recognized for his service and leadership — was honored on April 24 with a $1,500 Community Service Scholarship from Southeast Gas. He was one of 25 students across Southeast Alabama to receive the award at a ceremony held at Troy University, which shows Southeast Gas's strong commitment to education and community development.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Students and staff at Dothan City Schools raised $18,326.77 this school year in the Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge to promote heart health through CPR training and healthy living programs. The fundraiser reached over 3,500 students and families, trained 341 participants in hands-only CPR, and provided heart health resources to 300 teachers — $2,500 from the total will be reinvested into local schools to support ongoing health education.  Wiregrass Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey awarded over $376,000 in grants to police departments in six south Alabama counties to buy essential equipment. Cottonwood received $24,000 for a drug identification device while Newville was given $37,765 for body armor, tasers and other gear to keep officers safe.  Wiregrass Daily News
