COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wiregrass Hope Group will host its 2nd Annual Walk for Life fundraiser, including a kids' race—along with the Pastor Dash.  WTVY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On May 7, the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce will host two free workshops for local business professionals—one run by Troy University from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 102 Jamestown Blvd that covers generational workplace communication and another led by Jim McDonough from 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. on business leadership and management; registration is required.  Wiregrass Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • A 28-year-old Dothan man (Richard Alexander Wilson Jr.) was found shot to death Sunday morning in a home across the street from Legion Field (an unknown citizen called 911), and police are investigating the crime.  WTVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Heart of Headland is finishing its third mural on East Church Street at The Locals Seafood and Grill in downtown Headland to honor a 50-year Harvest Festival that celebrates local agriculture and heritage — the project is part of an eight-phase plan to brighten the area and add custom-engraved bricks, and the mural is expected to be finished in June. Local artist Wes Hardin is handcrafting the piece with images from past community events.  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dothan City Schools has launched an online survey to ask the community for input on choosing the new superintendent—this survey stays open until May 7. It takes about ten minutes to complete and keeps responses anonymous.  Wiregrass Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents learned that May 7 marks the start of federal REAL ID enforcement—meaning a federally approved ID such as a STAR ID, U.S. passport, passport card, or active military ID will soon be needed—and that STAR IDs remain available at ALEA Examining Offices for those not planning to fly or enter federal facilities.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Today, the state senate is considering a bill that would stop energy and gas companies from shutting off power for households that miss payments in extreme weather or when the home includes children under 12, elders over 65, service members, or someone who needs power for medical devices (if passed, the law will take effect Oct. 1). Energy advocates say the measure comes as Alabama faces high energy bills and heavy utility costs.  WTVY
