- ➤ Dothan's Winn-Dixie stores at 1571 Westgate Parkway and 1151 Ross Clark Circle will close in late July to be remodeled into Aldi stores — employees are unsure if they will keep their jobs. WDHN
- ➤ Governor Ivey signed a proclamation on Friday that declared May 4th–11th as National Small Business Week to honor small businesses as key drivers of our economy; the announcement noted these firms create nearly 47 percent of private-sector jobs and have grown steadily over 25 years — boosting exports and economic progress. - ➤ Dorsey Love, an Ashford man accused of strangling a Dothan pageant queen in a murder-for-hire plot, pleaded not guilty on May 1—he faces charges after a protection order was filed against him on July 29 last year. WDHN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Dale County Cattlemen’s Association announced it will offer three local high school seniors a $1,000 scholarship if they enroll in a two- or four-year college, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and have a connection with the association. Applicants must submit two recommendation letters + a one-page essay by May 10 at 3:45 p.m. by mailing or dropping off their materials at the Dale County Extension Office in Ozark. - ➤ Houston County Schools announced it will host its free Summer Exploration Camp for incoming 7th and 8th graders from July 7–10 at the Houston County Career Academy. The camp will run daily from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.—lunch and a free t-shirt will be provided while families must arrange drop-off and pick-up and registration will close when capacity is reached. - ➤ Dothan commissioners will vote next week on a $56 million contract with Brasfield and Gorrie LLC to build a new city hall on the former Houston County courthouse parking lot acquired for $2 million — the facility will replace a building that is over 50 years old. WTVY
- ➤ Mayor Mark Saliba is set to make history as he nears a third consecutive term and is expected to announce his candidacy soon—he could become the first Dothan mayor to serve three straight terms. WTVY
