  • Wiregrass Food Bank will host its 'Stamp Out Hunger' drive this weekend—neighbors can leave non-perishable food at their mailbox on Saturday before mail delivery or visit the Food Bank from 2 to 6 p.m. for larger donations to help fight hunger in our community.  Rickey Stokes News

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Houston County Sheriff's Office investigator Chris Summerlin pleaded guilty to theft after stealing $2,200 in cash evidence from a bank robbery—he already paid restitution and took theft classes—and will have his charges dismissed if he successfully completes the diversion program.  WDHN
  • On May 5, an Ozark woman was dragged 10-15 yards during a fight when she refused to give a ride home, leaving her in critical condition while police charged 22-year-old Jakevion Slater with assault in the first degree—her children were unharmed.  WDHN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Troy University cut the ribbon on its new nursing program facility (named for alumnus Billy Jones who oversees 17 nursing homes) on May 6th.  WTVY
  • Carver School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology’s third-grade Rookies Team and fifth-grade Intermediate Team have qualified for the Perennial Math National Championship under coach Suzanne Richards—marking the first time in school history. The teams will compete with live timed challenges on a virtual platform later this month.  Wiregrass Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dothan City Commission approved $56 million to convert the former main courthouse parking lot into the city's new city hall—construction is expected to begin soon following the vote.  WTVY
  • Jimmy McCray announced his bid for mayor in Dothan today, citing his experience in the army and as a police officer to address city challenges+ he promises to use his background to strengthen public safety and local leadership.  WTVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Ivey declared May 5—11 as Lung Cancer Action Week to encourage residents to learn about lung cancer risks, screening and early detection. The proclamation supports the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE campaign while Alabama faces higher lung cancer cases and lower survival rates than the national average.  Wiregrass Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Dothan City Commission recognized the Providence Christian School boys basketball team for winning the state 2A championship under coach Mark Wright—marking the school’s first title as the Eagles defeated Tuscaloosa Academy 89-61 and city leaders celebrated the win Tuesday morning.  WTVY
