  • Dothan City Animal Shelter introduced Riveting Rachel as its newest Pet of the Week on May 13 (the shelter showcased her to highlight adoptable pets), drawing local community interest in potential adoptions.  WTVY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Georgia-Pacific announced that it will permanently close its Cedar Springs Containerboard mill later this year, which will affect about 535 jobs and see most positions end by August 1 as production winds down to fulfill existing orders. The company said competitive challenges led to its decision and promised to support affected employees with local job placement resources — including opportunities with Koch companies.  Wiregrass Daily News

  • Dothan police arrested a man and a woman on Wednesday for stabbing a person in the head with a screwdriver — the victim sustained only superficial injuries that did not need treatment and the suspects are booked in Dothan City Jail.  WDHN

  • The Dothan Kiwanis Club awarded over $5,000 in scholarships to high school and college students during its annual ceremony on May 14 — the event highlighted the club's support for local education.  WTVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey signed the FOCUS Act on Wednesday, which bans cell phones in public schools during school hours except for students with health needs — schools will soon decide how to store the devices for classroom use.  WTVY
  • Dothan Police Corporal Terry Nelson was named Officer of the Year by nonprofit Wiregrass Angel House during a Wednesday luncheon for his work on a cold case that led to the arrest of a Dothan man charged with killing his wife 24 years ago. He credited his fellow officers for their dedication to fighting violent crime.  WTVY
  • Governor Ivey signed the FOCUS Act on May 14—setting new limits on student cell phone use in public schools and requiring devices to remain off and stored during class time. Local school boards must adopt these policies by July 1 and a statewide social media safety course will be required for students entering eighth grade.  Wiregrass Daily News
