COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dothan will vote tomorrow on a $6.4 million plan to convert the worn tennis courts at Rip Hewes Stadium into a pickleball complex with 25 covered courts. The city will cover most of the cost — Visit Dothan will contribute $1 million and the county will add $200,000 to support tournaments that could boost local business.  WTVY
  • Dothan United Soccer Club and Wiregrass Pets Rescue and Adoption will host Paws at the Pitch donation and adoption event at Rip Hewes Stadium on May 31 at 5:30 p.m. Fans can meet adoptable pets and bring donation items such as unopened pet food, leashes, collars or toys for free entry—organizers ask that personal pets stay home to keep the event safe for the animals.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Jim Yance and his wife Jessica began raising commercial beef cattle in 2006 (applying techniques learned from his father and grandfather) and continue their family farming tradition.  WTVY

  • Taylor and Taylor Queens cut the ribbon for a new Dollar General at the 4800 block of Hartford Highway across from Annie Pearl’s Restaurant, where the store is stocked with fresh meats, produce and staple items. Officials say the design is a first for the area and the store will help ease the local food desert—keeping tax dollars in town.  Rickey Stokes News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Billy Hutto the program manager & director and Reid Williams explained that the musical Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief will run from June 5 to 7 at The Cultural Arts Center in Dothan with evening shows at 7:00 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m.; funds raised will support SEACT’s educational summer programs.  Wiregrass Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents and students at Rehobeth spoke at the Houston County Board of Education meeting to save their ROTC program because the county plans to merge it with programs from four other schools at the Career Academy after students asked to leave. The board will finalize its decision by June 4 and critics say the change may force schedule shifts and a switch from a Navy to an Army track + the program is known nationally for its success.  WDHN

  • Beginning Wednesday, May 21, Dothan Utilities will abandon its old water valves as part of scheduled maintenance.  WTVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dothan Leisure Services joined News4 during Live at Lunch to discuss water safety tips and advise on safe swimming practices for the summer. The segment helped explain key precautions to prevent water-related accidents.  WTVY
  • Publix has recalled its GreenWise Pear, Kiwi, Spinach & Pea Baby Food sold in local stores because routine tests found elevated lead levels—shoppers are urged to return the product for a full refund.  Wiregrass Daily News
