COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dothan first responders were honored at a luncheon during EMS Week (May 17-23) declared by the city to recognize their service to the community. The event continues today as local EMS contributions are celebrated.  WTVY
  • Reverend Gerald Houston Maddox, a Dothan native and longtime minister, died Tuesday, May 19 at Valley View Health and Rehabilitation in Madison — funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23 at Liberty Methodist Church with burial following at Liberty Cemetery.  Rickey Stokes News
  • Dothan police remind residents to abide by noise ordinances as family cookouts and gatherings during Memorial Day weekend may trigger loud noise complaints + they stress keeping volumes low to preserve community peace.  WTVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Dothan Opera House will host two free military band concerts in June as part of America 250. The 151st Army National Guard Band performs on Wednesday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. and the U.S. Naval Academy Band’s Electric Brigade performs on Tuesday, June 30 at 7 p.m. (tickets required).  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A teacher at Jerry Lee Faine Elementary is on paid leave as City Schools investigate possible misconduct (no charges have been filed) and officials ask families to direct questions to the system’s attorney.  WTVY
  • A new private school is coming to Dothan with a $500 annual tuition — state scholarships let some families attend for free.  WTVY
  • Wallace Community College-Dothan received a $10K grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support a project aimed at expanding adult education programs. The project—Removing Barriers Through Adult Literacy Skills & Certifications—will serve 117 learners with GED prep and certification courses across local counties.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Primer private school will reopen the former Montana Magnet School in Dothan as a K-8 facility starting in August. It will charge $500 tuition with some students attending free via scholarship — the school uses small group learning and technology to let each child work at its own pace.  WTVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Southeast Health Medical Center treated its first patient with irradiated blood products today after installing a new blood irradiator to aid cancer patients and premature infants; the Champions of Hope event returns Oct. 17 to support local cancer care initiatives.  Wiregrass Daily News

  • The Ariton Purple Cats won their third state baseball championship in four years; head coach Bob Pickett said the team celebrated briefly + now they will resume training to secure another title.  WTVY
