COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Dale County Sheriff’s Office will host its annual Youth Fishing Rodeo on June 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Dale Medical Center’s Surgery Center pond on East Roy Parker Road—open to children 15 and younger where prizes will be given for the biggest fish and most fish caught while Sheriff Mason Bynum hosts the event and parents are encouraged to pre-register.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Col. Charles Ward, the Ozark police chief and public safety director, announced his mayoral run saying he is running for the people — at a Dothan School Board meeting, Melanie Hill hit on Chairman Scott Childers, and on June 10 the Dothan Opera House held a ribbon cutting for the City Center Project.  Rickey Stokes News

CRIME NEWS

  • A Henry County jury acquitted Dothan man La’Felix Thomas in the 2018 death of his longtime girlfriend after several hours of deliberation—prosecutors noted her injuries did not match his accident injuries while defense maintained there was no evidence linking him to the assault.  WTVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 10, 2025, the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to close 27 churches in south Alabama and the Florida Panhandle—property is being transferred immediately to the board of trustees. Six churches in our area are among those affected, and the closures were driven by declining membership and recent property disputes.  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dothan City Board of Education will hold a public work session on June 18 at 1665 Honeysuckle Road to interview five candidates for the next superintendent with sessions from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A Meet and Greet reception follows from 5:30 to 7 p.m.—community members are urged to attend and learn about the candidates’ visions.  Wiregrass Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Army changed the base's name from Fort Novosel back to Fort Rucker—honoring Capt. Edward W. Rucker for his World War I heroism instead of Confederate officer Col. Edmund Rucker. The Army said the move follows a law to remove Confederate names from military installations and will implement the change immediately for six posts.  WTVY
  • A state policy group warned that proposed federal changes to SNAP could shift nearly $300 million in costs to Alabama—measures that may add new work reporting requirements for 165,000 people and leave thousands of families without food. Local advocates have urged Senators Tuberville and Britt to oppose the changes in order to protect the more than 750,000 beneficiaries in need.  WTVY
