COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 6th Annual Red, White & Boom Independence Day event will take place Saturday, June 28 at Rehobeth High School Stadium with music, food, fireworks, and helicopter rides scheduled from 2 to 7 p.m. Organizers said gates will open at 3 p.m. with free entry for anyone who brings a canned good to benefit the Southeast Alabama Baptist Association — fireworks will begin promptly at 9:05 p.m.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • The Wiregrass Amateur Radio Club will host its annual Field Day at Northside Methodist Academy in Dothan on June 28 and 29 — a free, family-friendly event featuring live radio demonstrations and emergency communication practice.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Wired Ministries is wrapping up a week of service that brought hundreds of local church volunteers to help kids at the Boys and Girls Club—volunteers worked on academics and sports, and the event will end with one final night of worship.  WTVY

CRIME NEWS

  • A Dothan man, Dwight Mills, pleaded manslaughter for the 2001 killing of his wife in Houston County—he will serve two years in prison followed by five years probation—after a plea deal approved by her daughter.  WDHN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 26, the 20th Circuit court in Houston and Henry Counties held sessions where Judge Benjamin Lewis conducted TV-based initial appearances and reviewed 24 criminal cases and five domestic relations cases in Houston County. Houston County circuit judge Henry D — who oversaw 31 criminal cases including forgery and assault — and Henry County civil judge R Todd Derrick with one civil case were also part of the day’s court schedule.  Rickey Stokes News
  • AAA Alabama warns families that teen drivers must follow the Hands-Free Law—drivers cannot hold phones while driving—and the Graduated Drivers License Law, which limits driving late at night and restricts non-family passengers to lower crash risks.  WTVY
  • Customers with 334 numbers must use 10 digits for local calls because after January 23, seven-digit dialing will not work—this rule starts with a six-month permissive period beginning July 23; new phone lines will get the 483 area code when 334 numbers run out, but current numbers will stay the same.  WTVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials in Houston County urged residents to prepare as triple-digit heat is forecast—safety tips include staying indoors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drinking plenty of fluids, wearing light and loose-fitting clothing, taking breaks if working outdoors, and checking on vulnerable neighbors to ensure children and pets are not left in vehicles.  Wiregrass Daily News
