COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several Wiregrass organizations will host free back-to-school events through early August in Dothan and nearby areas, providing school supplies, backpacks, food, and haircuts for students. Event details include a Back 2 School Bash at Ozark on July 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a supply giveaway in Headland on July 20—registration may be needed as supplies are limited.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Dothan Leisure Services is launching a new program for visually impaired adults that offers sports like Goalball, Beeper Baseball, and Soccer as well as pottery classes and games at the Doug Tew Therapeutic Recreation Center—transportation is provided within city limits. CRIME NEWS

  • A Dothan man was charged with multiple drug offenses when police searched a residence in the 700 block of West Newton Street on Tuesday—seizing fentanyl, meth, and cocaine.  Dothan Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dothan Leisure Services will launch the Beyond the Bell afterschool program on Aug. 5 for children aged 6 to 12, offering arts and crafts, educational games and snack time in a safe environment. The program will cost $60 per month and provide free transportation from local schools to designated recreation centers — registration is encouraged due to limited space.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Lee Jacobs was tapped as acting superintendent while the school board continues its search for a permanent leader. On Tuesday, the board narrowed the field from five candidates to two finalists — Dr. Kari McGann and another candidate.  Dothan Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Choctawhatchee Riverkeeper Michael Mullen announced that high levels of E. coli were found in Hurricane Creek at Hutto Park and Claybank Creek near U.S. HWY 84 on July 2 — contamination may stem from failing septic tanks, hidden sewer overflows, or wildlife — and he advised residents to avoid these waters until quality improves.  WTVY
