COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Faye Richardson (82) has served meals, checked on residents, and cared for seniors at the New Brockton Senior Citizen Center for ten years and is being inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. She will be honored through three public events, including a town recognition today at the Municipal Building, a retirement party on July 29 at the Senior Citizen Center, and an induction ceremony on August 10 at the Montgomery Marriott Prattville Conference Center.  WTVY
  • Blooper Animal Rescue is coordinating a low-cost cat spay and neuter service that will run on Tuesday, July 22 with pick-up on Wednesday, July 23—services require prepayment and are offered only for cats. The program will cost $25 per cat for Medicaid cardholders—limited to two per household—while non-Medicaid owners pay $70, and stops will be set up at various locations in the Wiregrass area.  Wiregrass Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Carin Chavers and her husband Phillip pleaded not guilty as they face charges for allegedly lying to police about a deadly hit-and-run that killed pedestrian Matthew Cook on February 28 — investigators say Phillip was driving on U.S. 431.  WTVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, July 19, the historic Dothan Opera House will host the inaugural Circle Sessions as six singer-songwriters perform original music to compete for a share of $5,000 prize money. Mitchell Automotive presents the event with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and tickets priced at $10 — the contest aims to spotlight rising musical talent.  Wiregrass Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teens interested in babysitting can sign up for a babysitter’s course hosted by U.S. Army Child and Youth Services on July 16—scheduled to be held at the Youth Sports and Fitness Building at 8950 7th Avenue from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.—that will cost $30 and is open to youth aged 13 to 18 with registration closing on July 15.  Wiregrass Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dothan has a rich baseball history—beginning in 1915, teams played under different names and won nine league titles with stars like Mike Marshall and Ben Paschal. The city's past in leagues such as the FLAG, Dixie, and Alabama-Florida shows its long love for the game.  WTVY
