Families in the Wiregrass region will save on eligible back-to-school items during the upcoming tax-free weekend starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 17 and running until midnight Sunday, July 19 — items include clothing, computers and school supplies as outlined by the Alabama Department of Revenue.

Alabama families will save on computers, books and clothing free of the state and local sales tax during the back-to-school tax holiday from July 17 to 19.

Exemption limits increased to $156 for clothing and $1,173 for computers (Rick Brown of the Alabama Retail Association said the changes benefit shoppers).

Sydney Brackin said the Dothan Community Math Tournament will be held this week in town, inviting local students to test their math skills (organizers expect many participants).

Johns Chapel AME Church is running a summer enrichment program to boost reading skills before school starts.

Reading specialist Donna Lampley and Pastor Willie White say the program offers a safe space for learning — a head start for local families.

A local aviation camp introduced students to flying careers with hands-on lessons and career talks at Dothan Regional Airport (a community airfield).

The sessions started yesterday and will continue this week to help students learn about aviation.
