- ➤ Tim Skipper, a cherished community member who served in law enforcement and owned a comic shop, died on July 5 at age 60. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 9 at Sunset Funeral Home — he will be laid to rest at Newton City Cemetery. Rickey Stokes News

- ➤ Dothan 911 dispatched a structure fire at the 900 block of Dogwood Trail at 08:58 a.m.—reports said sparks started the fire. Rickey Stokes News
- ➤ James Spears died in a car crash on County Road 41 in Skipperville when his truck left the road and hit a tree around 1 a.m. on Saturday, and his family remembers him as a kind and funny person. WDHN
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A woman with a long health history died in custody at the Houston County Jail after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath — her body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy as officials worked to locate her next of kin. WDHN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dothan City Schools announced that Tracy Nelson is the new School Safety Coordinator. A retired captain from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency with almost 30 years of experience, he began work on July 7—he will work with school leaders and local law enforcement to keep students safe. WDHN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ TSA announced Monday, July 7 that airport passengers with REAL ID can keep their shoes on during security screenings—improved technology and a threat reassessment led to the change. Passengers without REAL ID must still remove their shoes. WTVY
LIFESTYLE NEWS
- ➤ Sweet Grown Alabama has launched a contest to choose the best surf and turf dish that features both seafood and land meat — the contest runs until July 21 and eight restaurants will be narrowed through a vote — with judges choosing a winner on July 28-31 who will earn a cash prize, plaque and media features.
