ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 8:52 p.m. today, Dothan 911 sent firefighters & police to 1705 Keating Road for a structure fire where smoke and flames were seen, and crews quickly contained the fire to the front room while searching for any occupants inside.  Rickey Stokes News

CRIME NEWS

  • A Dothan woman, Selena Cheyanna Smith, was charged with aggravated child abuse after admitting she injured a child under five who received emergency surgery and is now in serious but stable condition — police said the injuries did not match her claim of an accidental fall.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • At 8:46 p.m. on July 9, Dothan 911 dispatched police, fire, and Pilcher Ambulance to East Lafayette Street and Fourth Avenue—where a victim suffered a stab wound to the chest—and law enforcement and EMS arrived on scene.  Rickey Stokes News

  • On July 9, at the Dothan Kiwanis meeting, Federal Reserve lead Anoop Mishra explained what the Fed does and answered questions about current economic impacts — he discussed several topics with local members.  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Houston County Schools will offer free breakfast and lunch to all students for the 2025-2026 school year through the Community Eligibility Provision program — no forms are needed.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Young scientists from the Wiregrass are studying DNA this week at Dothan High School in HudsonAlpha Wiregrass’ Code of Life program. Twenty-two campers in grades six through nine learned lab techniques such as micropipetting and engineered glowing bacteria — the program shows Dothan City Schools' dedication to STEM learning.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • The Dothan Board of Education on Tuesday offered Dr. Garrick Askew the role of superintendent, making him the first Black leader of the district and the fifth in under 11 years. He must now work out contract details, and past superintendents faced legal fights and strong disagreements — leaving many to worry about his future tenure.  WTVY
