GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • District 3 candidates answered a questionnaire for the Aug. 5 election and said they will use tech and drones & work to improve downtown while promising plans to boost jobs and handle accessibility issues & support public safety.  Dothan Eagle
  • Scott Childers, chair of the Dothan School Board, said he wrote a $27,530.25 check from his own account to prove his commitment amid a censure by four board members and the superintendent. He urged voters to act on the August 5th election—warning that the board's collusion needs to be stopped and noting that a new superintendent is now in charge.  Rickey Stokes News
  • Houston County District 3 commissioner Ricky Herring said he will not run for a third term after nearly eight years of service—he praised his work on the Farm Center and will continue serving until his seat is up in over a year. He did not rule out returning to politics in the future.  WDHN
  • Dothan candidates Michelle Beacham, Brenda Guilford and Donald Hogans answered a questionnaire for the Aug. 5 Board of Education election and stressed their plans to boost public education and support local schools. They outlined efforts to increase parental involvement, retain quality educators and improve outcomes for underserved students—key issues in the district.  Dothan Eagle
  • The Dothan Police Department is accepting applications for new officers with a starting pay of at least $54,337.92 per year after finishing the Police Academy — interested candidates must apply online by July 30.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Voters in Dothan planning to cast absentee ballots for the municipal election on August 5 must act quickly as deadlines approach—mail applications by July 29, hand-deliver applications by July 31, complete ballots by 5:00 p.m. on August 4, and mail ballots by noon on August 5. The election includes contests for Mayor, Associate Commissioners, and the City Schools Board of Education.  Wiregrass Daily News

  • Dothan United is set to host USL2 playoff matches next weekend as teams from Little Rock, Louisiana, and Asheville travel here and the club plays its final regular season home game today at 7:30 p.m. Fans can enjoy giveaways — including fireworks, team gear, and food that supports the Alabama Kidney Foundation.  Wiregrass Daily News
