Volunteer Firefighter Day is set to help local fire departments across the Wiregrass area overcome challenges in recruiting and retaining volunteers — officials hope the event will boost community involvement in firefighting efforts.

A regional Volunteer Firefighter Day will be held Saturday at the Wiregrass Public Safety Center in Dothan.

The event will offer facility tours, live demonstrations and training displays (including a free catered lunch) to help recruit and retain firefighters.

Dothan Housing is teaming with Lynnd A Helping Hand to offer a giveaway for families on Saturday, Aug.

1 at Crimson Ridge Community Room (105 Booker St.) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Families will receive essential items such as kitchen supplies and bedding; registration is required for 30 spots.
