EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Principal Todd Mitchell of Carver 9th Grade Academy said the new FOCUS Act will require all student cell phones to be stored in electronic lockers during the school day — a change from the previous system that used classroom closets — and will add an extra phone line for parent contact as rules take effect in the upcoming school year. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Meteorologist Zack Webster said that record-breaking heat may be behind Dothan as trends point to cooler weather in the coming afternoons—scattered showers and thunderstorms will bring relief from dangerous heat and humidity. WTVY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State veteran home officials said the Enterprise Rehab Center used nearly 200 BGA employees to care for 100 veterans temporarily moved from a damaged state home after a fire in April, and they stressed that there is no overlap in care between the two facilities. The arrangement will continue until at least September when restoration ends, and the center has opened new building wings while postponing a planned renovation due to the fire. WDHN
- ➤ Wiregrass native and Alabama senator Katie Britt advanced the 2026 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act that will provide $14.4 million for law enforcement and community projects—including over $1 million for Dothan’s Drone as First Responder program and $500,000 for Enterprise’s Special Response Team to fight fentanyl trafficking— and the Senate will consider the bill this week before it moves to the House.
