COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Church at the Crossing is hosting its annual Kicks & Cuts event today at the Dothan Civic Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.—the event will give new shoes and haircuts to 1,500 children from kindergarten through 12th grade, with volunteers and sponsors helping serve families across the Wiregrass region.  WDHN
  • Strings 4 Heroes, a local non-profit, will offer free weekly guitar lessons for veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders next Monday at 7 p.m. at The Church On Boll Weevil Circle — the classes will use the ChordBuddy to aid players of all skill levels in learning guitar.  Wiregrass Daily News
  • Wiregrass United Way hosted its annual Pacesetter Kickoff on Friday — the event featured volunteers packing 50,000 meals for the Wiregrass Area Food Bank. The organization also announced its fundraising goal for 2025.  WTVY

  • Landmark Park in Dothan opened the Smithsonian travelling exhibit Spark! Places of Innovation today — it uses photos, artifacts, and interactive displays to show how local ideas and inventions foster rural innovation and runs until August 31st.  WTVY
  • Today, the Wiregrass Museum of Art holds its First Saturday Family Day—free art activities invite local families to explore art at the museum.  WTVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, businessman Rickey Stokes filed a court motion to block the school board vote to appoint a new superintendent, alleging that board members are planning to approve Dr. Garrick Askew’s contract prematurely—potentially in violation of open meeting laws. The board approved Askew in a 4—3 vote last month, and his hiring remains stalled due to contract negotiations and ongoing legal review.  WTVY
  • Hundreds of educators gathered at the Dothan Civic Center on Friday for Wiregrass Institute 2025—an event hosted by Dothan City Schools, Henry County Schools and Houston County Schools to boost teacher energy ahead of the new school year. The gathering began at 8:00 a.m. with a pre-show celebration and featured a keynote by Gerry Brooks along with a School Spirit Competition that united campus teams.  WDHN
