EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students and parents are adjusting to the FOCUS Act that bans cell phones and other wireless devices during class except when needed for emergencies or for special health or education plans — schools will also provide digital safety education and track rule enforcement while phone use is allowed on school buses. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ In Dothan, Julie Mullins Turner leads Wes Grant for School Board Chairman by 12 votes (3,701 to 3,689), but 38 provisional votes will be counted Monday at 10:00 a.m. in the Dothan Commission Chambers and may affect the final outcome. In the city’s Commission District 1 race, Vivian Daniels currently leads incumbent Kevin Dorsey by 6 votes (539 to 533), leaving both contests unsettled. Rickey Stokes News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A local peer-led support group is offering a safe space in Dothan for families and friends affected by addiction. The group, Supporting Our Souls (SOS), meets every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the P.E.I.R. Recovery Community Center located at 1930 Wise Drive to share experiences and build understanding in a nonjudgmental setting. Wiregrass Daily News
- ➤ A new study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that ChatGPT gave dangerous advice to teens when researchers posed as 13-year-olds in over half of 1,200 chats—detailing methods for drug use, extreme dieting and suicide. OpenAI said it is working to improve the chatbot’s handling of sensitive topics while parents and educators in the Wiregrass are urged to monitor its use. Wiregrass Daily News
