- ➤ Moma Tinas Mission House will host Dothan’s 19th Annual Soup Kitchen Anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at 605 North Alice Street—featuring a Backyard BBQ Cook Off with cash prizes, a trophy, food, games, rides and live music. Organizers need volunteers, donations and prizes—local businesses are invited to set up booths to support the celebration. Wiregrass Daily News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A judge warned the Dothan School Board that he could overturn Monday's vote to hire Dr. Garrick Askew if a Friday hearing shows the board broke Open Meetings law—board attorney Mark Boardman said the vote is valid. Board members are reluctant to cast their vote until the hearing. WTVY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday the Dothan School Board met in a special called meeting led by board member Brenda Guilford to approve a non published five-year contract for the new Superintendent of Education—four board members voted in favor while one member was absent. Rickey Stokes News
- ➤ The Dothan City Board of Education approved Dr. Garrick Askew’s five-year superintendent contract with a $199,500 base salary & monthly benefits for relocation and expenses, though board members still face an upcoming injunction hearing that could change his appointment. Askew is expected to start soon as the board moves forward with the new agreement. WTVY
