- ➤ One year after 14-year-old Semaj Wilkins died, his family and friends are remembering his life and the tragic day he passed away through a documentary that presents his story—his loss still touches many in our community. WTVY
- ➤ Lynn Williford, 56, passed away peacefully on August 13 in Dothan, Alabama—she was loved for her 36 years as a nurse at Southeast Health. Her family will host a celebration of her life on August 18 at 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park Chapel, greeting friends an hour before the service. Rickey Stokes News

- ➤ Families in Houston, Henry, and Dale counties can now enroll in a free Pre-K readiness program through the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center's HIPPY initiative to help children ages 2 to 5 prepare for kindergarten — the 30-week course offers storybooks, supplies, and daily activities with enrollment available Monday through Friday at 545 West Main Street in Dothan or by calling 334-792-6255. - ➤ OCI will host the 2025 Susan Morrison Memorial Scholarship Benefit on Aug. 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at The Royale by Southern Hospitality in Cowarts—this event will feature a semi-formal dining experience, live music, and a fundraising auction to support local students in higher education. - ➤ Yesterday, Dothan's new superintendent Dr. Garrick Askew said he must discuss the return of magnet schools with the school board after the elementary and middle school programs were closed (some families moved their children to private or county schools following the decision). - ➤ Applications for the Youth Leadership Dothan—Houston County program open Monday, August 18 and will close September 12, inviting 11th-graders from local schools to join a seven-month course that builds leadership skills through monthly sessions, a team retreat, and a community service project. Interviews are scheduled for September 23—24 and the program will run from November through May at a cost of $375 with partial scholarships available. Wiregrass Daily News
- ➤ Families in Dothan should know the IEP process for special education starts with a timely referral and parent consent, with schools having 60 days for evaluations, 90 days to decide eligibility, and 30 days to finalize the plan.
