- ➤ The Dothan Animal Shelter and Wiregrass Pets will host a Clear the Shelter event on Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. until noon at Wiregrass Pets on Hartford Highway in Dothan—families can adopt pets immediately with on-site counselors—designed to help pets find new homes before the shelter transfers operations. - ➤ The annual golf tournament will take place on Sept. 26 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course to raise money for area veterans—organizers say the event will support local veteran programs. WTVY
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On August 15, three Fort Rucker IT workers helped rescue a man trapped in an overturned car near a bridge on Highway 84 East—saving his dog and calling 911 in heavy rain. They worked quickly together before first responders arrived. Dothan Eagle
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Houston County Circuit Judge Kevin Moulton will sentence Marcus Hubbard on September 25 for the murder of a movie producer in Dothan — Hubbard faces life as the maximum punishment. WTVY
- ➤ Marcus Hubbard was convicted for murdering movie producer Rodney Caliste at his Dothan home on Oct. 24, 2019—blood spatter evidence placed him within three to four feet when the fatal shot was fired, and Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman said sentencing is expected on September 25 and may result in a life sentence. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ SEACT will present Bright Star, a musical set in the American South during the 1920s and 40s at the Cultural Arts Center on Sep. 10-13 at 7:00 p.m.—the production, written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, follows literary editor Alice Murphy as she reconnects with her past when a young soldier returns from World War II. More than 20 local performers and volunteers will bring life to this Tony-nominated show that blends bluegrass, gospel, and American traditions. WTVY
