COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Porter Park Event Plaza will open Saturday, September 13th in Dothan as a new venue for local entertainment — including baton twirling lessons and a food truck competition that benefits the SOS Animal Shelter.  WTVY
  • Wiregrass Pets Rescue and Adoption, a nonprofit, will absorb pets from the current Dothan Animal Shelter and host Clear the Shelter this Saturday, 9 a.m.—noon with adoptions and campus tours. The group will also launch school partnerships and volunteer initiatives to boost local animal care.  Wiregrass Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Patti Rutland Jazz is holding auditions tomorrow for Santa’s Workshop at Headland Studio (21 Park Street) and Brundidge Studio (118 N Main Street) for children ages 3 and up and community adults in penguin costumes. Headland performers will appear at the Dothan Civic Center while Brundidge participants will perform at Troy University, with auditions set in four time slots starting at 9:00 a.m. and all fees helping support scholarships and dance education.  Rickey Stokes News

  • Applications for the Women of Distinction Alumni Scholarship are due by September 26 and must include a recommendation letter from a teacher—counselor or administrator.  WTVY

  • Wallace Community College baseball players established a leadership council yesterday to share ideas and grow as a team—college officials say the group will guide decisions and boost performance.  WTVY

  • Lawman Kirksey and advocate Tiller are set to compete in a District 2 runoff on Tuesday, September 16; voters will decide which candidate best represents the community—one with law enforcement experience and the other with advocacy credentials.  WTVY
  • The Dothan Performing Arts Department today released new guidelines for Porter Park Events Plaza to boost safety and cleanliness—banning smoking, fireworks, glass containers, non-approved vendors, and pets on astro-turf—and expects all visitors to follow the rules.  Wiregrass Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Food and Drug Administration expanded its shrimp recalls for products sold at Walmart and Kroger in Alabama after tests suggested potential radioactive contamination with Cesium-137—a man-made isotope linked to long-term health risks; officials said affected products from an Indonesian supplier should not be consumed.  Dothan Eagle
  • Katie Holland, executive director of Rosemary House, said that the dementia caregiver center helps support caregivers in our community. Sonja Granberry Webster announced that a program—Alabama Twirling Angels—will let local residents learn baton twirling, offering a new creative opportunity.  WTVY
