Over the weekend marking 30 years since Hurricane Opal hit south Alabama and the Florida panhandle, the storm left hundreds of homes damaged, thousands without power and 27 people dead.
It formed in the southern Gulf, quickly strengthened to a Category 4 then fell to a lower Category 3 by landfall near Pensacola — its name was retired for the serious destruction it caused.
